2012 Summer Seminar for High School Students
Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 9:00 AM - Friday, September 14, 2012 at 4:00 PM (PDT)
Oakland, United States
Few students have the opportunity to learn the basic ethical and economic principles of open markets and free societies. Yet these principles are essential for understanding, appreciating, and preparing them for the world they will soon enter.
Hosted at the Independent Institute’s Headquarters Conference Center in Oakland, CA, the Challenge of Liberty Summer Seminar is a five-day series of lectures, readings, films, multimedia presentations, and small group discussions on the principles of free-market economics and the philosophical foundations of freedom and natural rights.
Each day consists of presentations by key university professors and Independent Institute research fellows, as well as smaller round-table discussions. Lunches will be provided.
|Monday||Ethics and Liberty: Examination of natural rights and their importance in free, peaceful societies|
|Tuesday||Free Markets: Why voluntary cooperation between individuals fosters growth and prosperity|
|Wednesday||Public Goods and Market Failures: How private property rights solve economic problems|
|Thursday||Monopolies and Money: Why government coercion hinders economic processes|
|Friday||Open Discussions: How markets solve rising healthcare costs and environmental problems|
